Baldness for either men or women has various potential causes. Determining the reason why you could be suffering will greatly help you in finding the ideal treatment for it. Baldness may be characterized by patchy hair loss on certain areas of your head – or generalized hair loss, which means that you’re losing your hair entirely.

Common Possible Causes for Baldness

Read and see if any of the descriptions appear to match your current situation.

Alocepia Areata

This is referred to as an autoimmune condition; it means that the body itself is responsible for the condition the individual in suffering from. In this case, the person’s autoimmune system is attacking the hair follicles, causing usually one but possibly two or three patches of hair loss. Fortunately, these patches will experience hair re-growth in 3 to 6 months even without treatment. However in some cases the regrown hair can be white.

Alocepia areata can become alopecia totalis, and in which case, the condition will cause the individual to suffer from complete baldness. Alocepia areata can also affect other hair follicles in your face and body.

Fungal Infections

Yes, hair loss can also be caused by fungal infection. School-age children are the ones who mostly suffer from this condition. When the scalp area is hit by a fungal infection. Oral antibiotics are, however, available for treating the infection and the hair will almost always grow back.

Male Pattern Baldness

Also known as androgenetic alopecia, this condition is caused by a mixture of genetics and hormones. It affects both men and women because male hormones are present in both male and female bodies.

Telogen Effluvium

This condition is actually not at all bad but simply a natural part of life. Hair on your scalp has an average lifespan of three years. When it reaches the last stage of its cycle, the telogen phase, it seeks to rest and falls out. Approximately 100 hair strands each day reach the telogen phase. When you use shampoo on your hair, the substance loosens up your hair strands, enough for them to fall out sooner than expected. But this is nothing to worry about because these hair strands were also nearing the telogen stage and the shampoo only expedited the entire process. All these hair strands will be replaced by the body.

It is estimated that 10% of our hair is always approaching the telogen phase. This can go as far as forty percent when we have just undergone surgery, childbirth, sudden weight loss, and high fever. But again, this is nothing to worry about because our body immediately seeks to replace any hair strands we’ve lost.

Traction Alopecia

Certain hairstyles exert too much pressure on your hair roots, causing you to lose much more hair than is usual or necessary. This condition is called traction alopecia. You can avoid it simply by ensuring that you don’t tie or bind your hair too tightly and to the extent of causing hair loss.

Trichotillomania

Some people have a habit of pulling their hair, even unconsciously so, while they’re thinking deeply or feeling stressed. In extreme cases, this can cause baldness. Trichotillomania results in broken-off hair strands rather than patches of baldness. It could lead to baldness given enough time of course. The only way to cure this condition is by becoming aware of your problem and resolve to avoid indulging in it.

Waking up each morning on to see a few hundred more hairs disappear down your shower drain is an unsettling feeling. Some will accept the baldness that will ultimately transpire as an enviable outcome, while others will chose to fight to keep their hair. This article titled “How To Treat Baldness Effectively” is for those who have decided that keeping their hair is the road which they would like to travel.

There are numerous factors that contribute to the hair loss process including heredity, hormones, disease such as diabetes, diet, lack of nutrition, stress, and poor hair care. Illness, stress, and diet are looked upon as temporary conditions and usually the hair loss is reversed when the anxiety producing condition dissipates, when diet is improved, when hair care is modified or when illness or disease is cured of managed. So when looking for answers as to how one might treat baldness these are certainly factors that should be taken into account but are likely not be the root cause.

The root cause is likely a combination of heredity and hormones. This combination is responsible for over eight out of every ten cases of male balding and one in four instances of female balding. The worst part is that hereditary hormone driven hair loss is progressive and will not reverse itself over time.

For those who have a predisposed tendency to balding there is a follicle damaging conversion process taking place in the hair cell, where testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is known as the hair loss hormone and for good reason. Over time the accumulation of DHT deep within the follicle damages and shrinks the follicle itself making it incapable of producing new hair growth. Some follicles will die (this is where balding occurs) others will produce unhealthy growth (often times thinning is noticed).

To treat baldness effectively either DHT conversion or DHT accumulation must be interrupted. At the same time an attempt must be made to reinvigorate dead or damaged follicles.

The two herbs most often mentioned to interrupt DHT conversion and/or accumulation are saw palmetto and nettle root extract. The only FDA approved oral prescription medication prescribed for male and female pattern baldness is finasteride (Propecia). The similarities between the mechanism of both the herbal solutions like saw palmetto and nettle and finasteride are unmistakable, with both blocking the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT (5 alpha reductase type 2).

The only FDA approved topical solution for hair loss is minoxidil (Rogaine). Minoxidil is very effective at protecting follicles yet undamaged by dihydrotestosterone but only considered moderately effective in producing new hair growth. While it has yet to be determined exactly how it works we do know that minoxidil enlarges follicles, prolongs the growth phase of each hair, and stimulates resting hairs to grow.

In summary, one could easily conclude that by using herb oral remedies to inhibit or block DHT accumulation combined with topical minoxidil a person would be giving themselves a very good chance to treat baldness effectively.

What To Do Next? There are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge and treat baldness effectively.
